  • Respond to 1 other student’s post. Your response has no specific length requirement, but you need to refer to something in the student’s post, showing that you read it (something like “I agree” or “Interesting!” is not enough for the points). If you respond to a student that initially responded to you, that also counts as your response (the idea is obviously to generate discussion here)

15 points for your own post (you get the full points if you respond to both A and B and your discussion is relevant to the topic; your opinions, ideas and experiences are not graded for “accuracy”)

REFLECTION TOPIC: MEMORY 

This assignment has two parts. Complete both A and B below. A is worth 5 points and B is worth 10 points. Include A and B in the same post. Then respond to one student (5 points).

A) Memory in everyday life

Find a reliable source about a recommended strategy to enhance memorization, provide your source and describe the strategy. Tell us what kinds of strategies you use to boost your memory in everyday life. How do you help yourself remember material for exams, work-related tasks or other instances? If you’d like, you can include a sample of the material you’re trying to remember and explain how you try to memorize it.

Alternatively, investigate how technology/smartphones might affect memory. Do some research on this and discuss your findings. Example questions: how does frequently taking photos affect memory for the life events? How does the “Google effect” impact memory? How do constant distractions from multiple technology sources impact cognition/memory?

B) Eyewitness testimony 

Memory distortions of eyewitnesses can lead to severe legal consequences. Explore the Innocence Project case file (link below), and find a case in which eyewitness memory played an important part. Briefly describe the case and discuss the role of eyewitness memory in the case.  You don’t have to cite the Innocence Project case in APA format, but provide the identifying information, so that others can look at it if they wish.

Please note that reading these cases can be upsetting. Alternatively (or in addition) you can explore and discuss why eyewitness testimony in general can be so unreliable. How do characteristics such as age, gender and ethnic group of the witness vs. the perpetrator affect eyewitness testimony? How do law enforcement procedures (e.g. interview styles, line-up identification, using composites) affect eyewitness testimony? If you select this part of the question, find at least one outside source and cite it in APA format.

One possible resource posted in Canvas is 60 minutes: Tragic case of false eyewitness testimony. This film discusses a famous case of mistaken testimony that lead to the false imprisonment of an innocent man. This was one of the first cases in which an innocent person who was convicted of a crime was later released based on DNA evidence. I do want to warn you that the first 2.5 minutes of the film describe a rape from the perspective of the victim. If you don’t want to see that, just skip the first minutes and watch the rest of the film which focuses more on the psychology of eyewitness testimonies, especially the important findings related to conducting line-ups and how they go wrong.
