Case study 1

1. Identify the kinds of systems described in this case.

Essay scoring program

It is a software that is used about an intelligent artificial technology that provides solutions to short answers instantly more accurately and can tender the feedback. The software is a learning program that can be used by learners to improve on their grades as it is accurate in marking and grading.

2. What are the benefits of automated essay grading? What are the drawbacks

The benefits and drawbacks of using the program

Among the benefits that accrue from the use of the software or the program is that it gives a chance for resubmission; hence, learners have an opportunity to improve on their grades. The program has also played a vital role in enabling an optimal learning environment. The accuracy of the program in offering accurate and correct grades cannot be underestimated because the software is not biased toward a learner or against him or hers (Graham, 2018). Despite the advantages associated with the program, it is also associated with disadvantages. For example, there has never been conclusive research to ascertain the differences in human graders and the software. A version of the software

like AES is not able to differentiate between the facts and fiction s hence cannot grade the work accurately. The worst about the demerits is that it would render human graders jobless if it would be entirely accepted in the system.

3. What management, organization, and technology factor should be considered when deciding whether to use AES?

Before adopting the use of AES, the management should first look at its reliability and efficiency, and above all, the cost to be incurred. There should be enough resources and infrastructure to ensure they are working as it requires skills, power, and a reliable network.

Case study 2

1. How did implementing a data warehouse help American Water move toward a more centralized organization?

Initially, most of the data were handled manually and posed a significant challenge in managing them. The problem was there because the management could not easily integrate the data .same files contained different names making them difficult to differentiate. This was achieved by the use of Sap, which was accepted by a company’s ERP system vendor. The system allowed migration of old data from the old version to the new platform.

2. Give some examples of problems that would have occurred at American Water if its data were not “clean”?

Some problems would still be experienced if the company data was not cleaned up. Some of the issues would be that the company would again be using manual means in data handling. It would still be taking long to create a desirable outcome because it would be taking too long to combine data from many systems.

3.How did American Water’s data warehouse improve operations and management decision making?

The company’s data warehouse has played a vital role in the improvement of efficiency, accuracy, and reliability. It is possible to ensure and review that the data are

accurate and consistent hence eliminating redundant data. Having data in a new platform ensures that management decision is made in the shortest time possible and can make an informed decision
